To be honest, I don’t have a very special or sentimental story as to why I became a nurse. I toggled back and forth between the idea of art and interior design as my major during my first year of undergrad and finished out the year undecided. I was clearly a confused teenager! However, I decided at the end of freshman year that nursing just made the most sense. In middle school and high school I thought I wanted to be a doctor (primarily because I was obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy), but I knew that the lifestyle wouldn’t be for me. So nursing ended up being the next best option.
After graduating nursing school and beginning my job at Vanderbilt, my skin took a hit. I think this was the point in my life where my skin obsession really began. I had been #blessed up to this point with good skin, so the breakouts were really tough on my self-esteem. I did a lot of research on my own trying to figure out what could be causing this change. I looked into product ingredients, tracked food I was eating, etc., and I was actually able to heal many of my breakouts with my own research process.
Once I decided to go back to graduate school, I knew that dermatology was an area I was interested in pursuing after graduation. Fast forward a few months to my first appointment at Skin Pharm. Instantly, I became obsessed with the work the providers were doing at Skin Pharm, and knew that cosmetic dermatology was going to be my passion. Turns out I was right. I had never really felt passionate about my work as a nurse. I loved my coworkers and the patients I was able to serve, but it wasn’t until I found Skin Pharm that I found my passion in the nursing field. After my first visit, I began following all the providers on Instagram, read books trying to educate myself and even took a Botox class – really anything I could do to try to prepare myself while I was in school. Honestly, I’m very grateful to Mary Alice, our wonderful Practice Manager, for not hating me after all the emails I sent to her and Maegan while I was in school trying to shadow or do clinical rotations at Skin Pharm.
Needless to say, it all worked out, and I’m so grateful for this job and the Skin Pharm team. It’s not often people are passionate about their work or land their dream job, especially right out of school. It really is hard to put into words how thankful I am to be here.
After becoming a patient at Skin Pharm and falling in love with the products, culture and overall vibe, I really just did as much as I could to educate myself and build relationships with the team. I knew that I wanted to work at Skin Pham for 2 years before I was hired, and I made it my mission to do so. Fun fact: I wrote in my planner at the beginning of 2020 as a goal for myself last year to "get hired at Skin Pharm." It didn’t happen in 2020, but it happened in January of 2021, so I still consider that a win!
I was a loyal Skin Pharm patient (truly would never let another person touch my face), I read books, followed and engaged with other people in the industry on social media, went to a Botox class to get hands-on experience and emailed sweet Mary Alice probably too many times.
I initially talked to Maegan about going to Dallas for the Advanced Provider Position. I was so scared to do that, but I was ready to embrace my inner cowgirl, saddle up and head to Dallas – yep, even though I’ve never even visited the city. As you can see, I was very dedicated to making my dream of working at Skin Pharm a reality. Thankfully, the Nashville position became available right after I graduated, and I got to stay in Tennessee with my friends and family.
When I’m not at Skin Pharm, chances are you can find me hanging out in The Nations with our group of best friends and all of our dogs. My boyfriend and I have a 3-year-old golden retriever named Fitz, and he is our pride and joy. I love the summer and being outside when it’s warm. My family has a wakeboard boat at Center Hill Lake, so that’s where I plan to be most weekends this summer! When I’m not at the lake, we love to travel to Florida – specifically the 30A area. The beach is like a second home to me, and I love to spend as much time there as possible.
I was actually pretty good when I was younger about protecting my skin, at least on my face. My friends actually used to make fun of me, because during the summer, they would always say my body and face were 2 different colors. I guess I had the right idea by protecting my face – but I do wish I had done a better job of extending my SPF to my whole body.
I hope that my patients can leave Skin Pharm feeling more confident and more educated about their skin health. Skin Pharm is such a unique setting in that, as providers, we're able to make our patients feel more confident, beautiful and empowered while also providing medical rationale about the treatments and products we are recommending. Healthy, glowing skin can do so much for a woman’s self-confidence, and as a provider, I hope I can give my patients just that.
