Five Easy Skin Care Tips for the Beach

Heading to the beach? We’re jealous! Seriously, though, we hope you have a great time, and we’d like to give you some quick and easy tips to help you avoid the number one beach buzzkill: SUNBURN.

  1. Apply SPF to yourself — and the rest of the family — prior to dressing for the beach. Yes, we mean before you put your swimsuits on. Not only does this ensure that you hit every inch of your skin, but it keeps you from damaging the fabric on your swimsuit or clothing with the zinc from the sunscreen. As a mom, I can attest that it’s much easier to negotiate with your kids before you get to beach — they’re much more likely to sit still while you cover them from head to toe with SPF. And yes, you may have to play the “We don’t go to the beach unless you stay still” card. Trust me, it works.
  2. Water. So much water. Bring backup for refills. If you don’t start drinking water until you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated, which isn’t doing your skin any favors.
  3. Cover your head! The scalp is a difficult part of the body to protect via SPF for women and men (unless you’re bald, and then it’s easy — and necessary — to cover it with sunscreen). Your best bet is a hat. And you’ve probably heard this before, but it’s true — the wider the brim, the better. Wearing a hat also protects those sexy summer highlights from the sun’s damaging rays.
  4. Don’t forget the most-forgotten areas. Areas of the body that are often overlooked include lips and ears. If you’ve ever had a sunburn on either, we bet you’ll remember to keep those areas covered. Also remember the back of your neck, tops of feet, and underarm area, which tends to be sensitive due to shaving. Grab a buddy (a cute one usually does a better job, ha) to help with those hard-to-reach areas.
  5. Reapply. Often. Yes, it feels like a pain, but you do need to reapply your SPF throughout the day, especially if you’re sweating a lot. Every two hours is a good rule of thumb, and definitely reapply every time you get out of the water, even if you’re using a waterproof or water-resistant SPF.

Beach skin care doesn’t end when you leave the beach — don’t forget post-sun care! I love to Epionce Renewal Calming Creme after a day in the sun. I also slather on Glow Factor and Biotherapy Cream for any stress I might have caused to the skin.
