Get to Know Lauren Zaucha, PA at Skin Pharm Dallas

How did I get into this career?

I always knew that I wanted to do something math and science related – I would prefer taking 100 math classes in place of one English class. I ended up majoring in Biomedical Engineering at Miami University because it seemed like a good fit, and because the Dean “seemed nice.” (A direct quote from my 18-year-old self and a totally legitimate reason to choose a degree…)

I loved what I learned as a biomedical engineer, but found the patient-centered component of my education to be the most fulfilling. I knew I wanted to explore this further, and, with the advice from peers and colleagues, I detoured from the medical school route to pursue my Masters of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies.

After completing graduate school, I began my career as a physician assistant on a multi-specialty surgery team. I covered many different services – from trauma surgery to cardiovascular surgery to plastic surgery. It was during this time that I realized my love for the coalescence of art and medicine and switched fields to cosmetic dermatology.

Cosmetic dermatology allows me to combine my technical skills with creativity and artistry to create work that both my patients and I are proud of. It’s also a rapidly evolving field of medicine, and, true to my engineering roots, I love that there’s always something new to research.

How did I end up at Skin Pharm?

I worked in cosmetic dermatology in Chicago, and over the last year, I started following Skin Pharm and all of the providers on social media. A colleague and I would always talk about the great work Skin Pharm providers perform and how cool/nice/friendly/funny (you get it) they are. I also began using Skin Pharm products and burning their candle (if you know, you know), and before long, I felt like their biggest fan.

I saw they would be opening a practice in Dallas soon and knew it was meant for me. I was just waiting to hit send on an email I had drafted when I saw they posted an Advanced Practice Provider position for Dallas.

I remember DMing Maegan on New Year’s Eve letting her know I applied, and when she responded, it made my entire year. A few good conversations and fun visits later, and here I am! Skin Pharm just feels like home to me, and I am so lucky to be part of the team.

What do I like to do when I’m not at Skin Pharm?

I like to live an active lifestyle; physical health is very important to me. I grew up a gymnast, so I love to do anything I can to remain athletic. Weightlifting, pilates, yoga, running, tennis – you name it. Ironically, and I’m not sure which passion came first, I love to bake. If it has chocolate, I’m in.

I also love to travel. My favorite place in the entire world is Positano, Italy, and I can’t wait to visit again someday soon. Northern Italy and New Zealand are on my shortlist – I’ll take any travel tips you have!

What do I wish I had done when I was younger to protect my skin?

I’ve always taken really good care of my body from the inside – I love to exercise and eat healthy. I wish I realized earlier how important it was to take care of my body on the outside, as well. Life truly is all about balance.

I was one of those… tanning beds before high school dances, tanning oil in the summer. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and should be treated with as much love and respect as the rest of your organs. The good news is, it’s not too late! I know of a place where these issues can be addressed. (Wink, wink!)

What do I hope for my patients?

I hope all of my patients feel like they can tell me their concerns, goals and ask their questions freely. Judgement has no place in my treatment room! I understand how stressful it can be to experience skin changes or to have insecurities. I love being able to work with each patient to develop a unique plan that is perfect for them and leaves them feeling better and brighter (both inside and out) than when they came in.
