Treatment Guidelines

BBL Photofacial

  • Schedule your appointment at least two weeks before a special event. Redness, swelling and pigmentation may be apparent in that time period.
  • Let your provider know if you have a history of cold sores. An antiviral may be prescribed.
  • You may not have an active rash in the area being treated.
  • Discontinue any photo-sensitizing medications or drugs (i.e. doxycycline, minocycline) at least 72 hours before treatment.
  • You’ll need to avoid Accutane for six months prior to treatment.
  • You’ll need to avoid sun tanning, tanning beds and self-tanners for two weeks before treatment.
  • You’ll need to avoid waxing for one week before treatment.
  • If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, we require clearance from your OB-GYN.
  • Redness, swelling and sensitivity might be present and can last up to a few days.
  • Sleep face-up and slightly elevated to help with swelling.
  • Taking an oral antihistamine may also help reduce swelling.
  • Do not pick or scratch at treated skin.
  • Avoid sun tanning and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for two weeks after treatment.
  • Avoid heat (i.e., saunas, hot tubs) for 1-2 days.
  • You may restart your regular skin care routine immediately after. Wait 24 hours before using retinol and chemical or physical exfoliants.
  • If exposed to the sun, always use broad spectrum SPF 30+ and reapply every two hours.
  • Treated pigment will turn darker (brown to black) within 24-48 hours. This will exfoliate off the face within about one week and off the body within about 2-3 weeks.
  • Treated vascular lesions may have a “bug bite” appearance and usually resolve in one to two days.
  • A series of BBL photofacials is recommended for best results — every 3-4 weeks for redness and pigment, and bi-weekly for acne.
