Summer School 05: Don’t Sweat Hyperhidrosis

Summer School 05: Don’t Sweat Hyperhidrosis

Had enough of hyperhidrosis?

We get it. Hyperhidrosis, otherwise known as excessive sweating, can make the summer months feel like an endless sauna sesh — and not in a good way! Hotter temps may not be the cause of hyperhidrosis, but they can certainly make it worse.

Luckily, our favorite wrinkle relaxers can provide some relief from the heat. In today’s Summer School lesson, our Atlanta provider Clare Taylor, NP-C explains how we use Botox and Dysport to treat hyperhidrosis.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating. This is the perfect topic for Summer School because of the heat and humidity, which can make excessive sweating worse. There can also be a genetic component to excessive sweating, as well as increased stress.

What treatments are available for hyperhidrosis?

Neuromodulators like Dysport and Botox! In the same way that Dysport/Botox temporarily decrease and relax muscle movement in wrinkles, they can also block nerve signals in the sweat glands and encourage the body to slow down sweat production.

Where do you inject Botox/Dysport when treating hyperhidrosis?

The most common areas that we treat for hyperhidrosis are the armpits, the palms of the hands and then the face, mainly that pesky upper lip sweat. Typically, we start with about 50 units per underarm, which is about 100 units total, and that dosing is recommended for the palms of the hands, too.

For the upper lip, we usually recommend about four units. Results are usually noticeable within a week and can last about four to six months depending on the areas treated and the dosage we used.
