What to Expect After Your First Chemical Peel

What to Expect After Your First Chemical Peel

You know what you don’t need? Dead, dull skin.

Let a chemical peel transform your skin and reveal the smooth, glowy skin of your dreams.

What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peels are simple, non-surgical procedures that combat multiple skin issues: sun damage, hyperpigmentation, acne, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven texture or skin tone and large pores. By using a combination of powerful acids, chemical peels break down the top layers of the epidermis, allowing brighter, even-toned and glowing skin to emerge.

How does a chemical peel treat my skin?

A medium chemical peel, also known as a TCA peel, is a strong treatment that uses alpha and beta hydroxy acids (AHAs and BHAs), retinoic acids and trichloroacetic acids to treat deep acne scars and wrinkles, prolonged sun damage and massive hyperpigmentation. Powerful AHAs like lactic or glycolic acids improve the appearance of fine lines, blemishes and hyperpigmentation. A medium peel also contains BHAs like salicylic acid, a natural anti-inflammatory that controls redness and irritation, and retinoic acids, which augment results and accelerate recovery time.

What does a chemical peel feel like?

The chemicals we use to exfoliate and treat your skin are strong! You may experience tingling and tightness during the procedure, and your skin may feel warmer. A medium peel can definitely sting a little (that's all those chemicals working their magic!), so we provide a handheld fan to minimize any discomfort. But don't be scared — generally, you should not experience an uncomfortable level of pain. Immediately after the treatment, your skin may feel a little sensitive and swollen. Your Skin Pharm provider will apply a protective ointment (and, if needed, ice packs) to soothe skin.

What is the recovery like?

After your appointment, you may need to take OTC pain relievers like ibuprofen to reduce discomfort and swelling. Since you've shed a layer of skin and your fresh, healthy skin needs extra protection, avoid sun exposure and strenuous exercise for 5-7 days. Be sure to wear SPF every day (which you should already be doing anyway). Don't freak out if your skin is still red and starts peeling — that's normal! You can expect this for up to seven days, so definitely use a stronger moisturizer for 1-2 weeks after your appointment (we recommend our soothing, healing Recovery Lotion), then the gorgeous, smooth and glowy skin will emerge.

How often do I need a chemical peel?

A series of chemical peels may be needed to treat more severe sun damage, acne scars or wrinkles. Regular chemical peels can encourage natural collagen production, a key to youthful looking skin. Talk to your Skin Pharm provider about what kind of peel is best to meet your personal skin care goals.
