Beneath acne, hyperpigmentation and dullness is a layer of fresh, glowing skin.
Revealing it starts with skin cell turnover, and a chemical peel is one of the best ways to promote that process. Powerful yet effective, this exfoliating treatment does require a little downtime. But our Plano provider Acacia McDonell, PA-C says the results are worth every second.
If your skin’s in need of a reset, today’s episode of Complexion Class is for you. Acacia explains how we use chemical peels to achieve smoother, clearer, more even-toned skin. Watch the full episode below or read on for the recap!
A chemical peel is a treatment that we apply to the top of your skin. It uses various ingredients, like salicylic acid, lactic acid, TCA and a strong retinoid, to cause rapid cell turnover and exfoliation. Ours is medical-grade, which does mean you need a medical license to administer it. It’s also medium-depth, meaning that it goes beyond just the superficial layer of the epidermis.
A chemical peel is amazing for hyperpigmentation, no matter the cause. I also love it for active acne and signs of previous acne, like texture and scarring. It helps improve the overall tone of your skin, fine lines, wrinkles and the look of pores, too.
In my opinion, the recovery period is the only downside of a chemical peel; but trust me when I say it’s worth every single second!
You’ll leave your appointment looking a bit yellow, but this is only temporary. The next morning, you’ll cleanse your face. You’ll notice some dryness, irritation, redness and maybe a little swelling. Peeling begins around day two. It’ll start around your mouth and continue outward over the next week.
Usually by day seven, sometimes day nine, the peeling will be completely done, and you’ll be left with glowing, beautiful skin!
Less is always more during the recovery period. We’ll send you home with our Jetsetter Kit, which will serve as your skin care routine for the next seven days. The most important thing to remember is to not pick or peel at the skin prematurely. When it’s ready, you can take a clean pair of eyebrow scissors and trim off any excess.
You’ll see results around day seven post-treatment. For best results, I do recommend a minimum of two treatments, or sometimes more if we’re dealing with aggressive acne or hyperpigmentation. Ideally, these are spaced out about four to six weeks apart.
