Here’s our plan

Your Appointment
  • Schedule your appointment at least two weeks before a special event. Redness, swelling and pigmentation may be apparent in that time period.
  • Let your provider know if you have a history of cold sores. An antiviral may be prescribed.
  • You may not have an active rash in the area being treated.
  • Discontinue any photo-sensitizing medications or drugs (i.e. doxycycline, minocycline) at least 72 hours before treatment.
  • You’ll need to avoid Accutane for six months prior to treatment.
  • You’ll need to avoid sun tanning, tanning beds and self-tanners for two weeks before treatment.
  • You’ll need to avoid waxing for one week before treatment.
  • If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, we require clearance from your OB-GYN.
  • We’ll apply a clear gel to the area being treated and protective eyewear.
  • We’ll then zap any unwanted skin concerns – this feels like a little rubber band snap and is quick!
  • We will assess skin throughout treatment to monitor for improvement.
  • We will then massage serums and SPF onto skin to hydrate and protect your new, bright complexion.
  • Redness, swelling and sensitivity might be present and can last up to a few days.
  • Sleep face-up and slightly elevated to help with swelling.
  • Taking an oral antihistamine may also help reduce swelling.
  • Do not pick or scratch at treated skin.
  • Avoid sun tanning and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for two weeks after treatment.
  • Avoid heat (i.e., saunas, hot tubs) for 1-2 days.
  • You may restart your regular skin care routine immediately after. Wait 24 hours before using retinol and chemical or physical exfoliants.
  • If exposed to the sun, always use broad spectrum SPF 30+ and reapply every two hours.
  • Treated pigment will turn darker (brown to black) within 24-48 hours. This will exfoliate off the face within about one week and off the body within about 2-3 weeks.
  • Treated vascular lesions may have a “bug bite” appearance and usually resolve in one to two days.

FAQs

  • Can I get this treatment for melasma?

We do not recommend light or laser therapy treatments for melasma. Instead, we recommend chemical peels, microneedling, a Gold Infusion and PRP treatments for melasma.

  • What’s the downtime like?

Your skin may look and feel like you have a mild sunburn after the treatment. This can be covered up with makeup, and you can return to work immediately after the treatment.

  • When will I see results?

Pigment will initially darken and improve around 10 days after the treatment when exfoliated from the skin. Redness improves during the treatment or over the next several days after the treatment. Facial vessels improve during the treatment or over the next several days after the treatment.

  • How long do results last?

Results from treatment are permanent. We recommend diligent lifestyle measures and a Skin Pharm skin care routine to maintain results.

  • What areas can be treated with a BBL?

    • Sun damage
    • Broken facial vessels
    • Rosy cheeks
    • Rosacea
    • Dullness
    • Fine lines and wrinkles
    • Acne and surgical scars
    • Stretch marks
  • Does it hurt?

The procedure is well tolerated and well accepted by patients. No anesthesia is needed.

  • Are there any other side effects I should know about?

The most common side effects include a mild sunburn look and feel, swelling and rarely hyper or hypopigmentation.

  • When can I wear makeup again?

Makeup may be worn immediately following the treatment.

  • I’m pregnant or breastfeeding. Can I get photofacials?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, we require clearance from your OB-GYN.
