Complexion Class 06: Botox for Breakouts (Yes, Really!)

Complexion Class 06: Botox for Breakouts (Yes, Really!)

Botox has some benefits that might surprise you.

When you think about treating acne, Botox and Dysport probably don’t come to mind first. Those injectables are reserved for relaxing wrinkles, smoothing expression lines and other cosmetic enhancements, right?

Not exclusively — Botox has anti-inflammatory properties that can actually improve acne, too! In today’s episode of Complexion Class, our Dallas provider and nurse practitioner Hannah Vance explains how.

Watch the full episode below or read on for the recap!

What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin, or Botox, is an injectable most commonly used to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. When injected, Botox blocks nerve signals to muscles, which prevents them from contracting and reduces movement.

What causes acne?

When excess oil, skin cell buildup and bacteria clog pores, acne occurs. Inflammation is always part of the acne disease process — it’s how our bodies attempt to fight off that bacteria, but it’s also what causes redness, swelling and sensitivity.

How can Botox help with acne?

Botox has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which work by inhibiting pro-inflammatory neuropeptides. So what does that mean for our skin? By inhibiting the skin’s ability to mount that inflammatory process, not only are we potentially reducing the likelihood of acne forming in the first place, but we’re also helping pre-existing acne lesions heal faster.

If you’ve ever had Botox, you may have experienced another benefit, too — research also shows that botulinum toxin can decrease your oil production. Whether you have acne-prone or oily skin, Botox might be a good option for you!
