What’s Microneedling? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

What’s Microneedling? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Ready for smooth, glowing skin?

We sat down with nurse practitioner and Skin Pharm Nashville provider Madeline Stoffer to chat through all things microneedling, one of our favorite multitasking treatments.

Okay, so what is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a pen-like device with tiny needles to create controlled punctures (or micro-wounds) on the top layer of the skin. These micro-wounds trigger the body to produce new collagen, elastin and capillaries, resulting in healthier, brighter, plumper skin all around!

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Microneedling can improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, melasma, hyperpigmentation, skin laxity and dullness, too. It can also improve the overall texture and tone of the skin.

Describe a typical microneedling appointment.

Your appointment will last approximately 45-60 minutes. First, you’ll cleanse your skin upon arrival in one of our dreamy bathrooms. Before starting treatment, your provider will assess your skin to ensure microneedling is the best treatment for you and your skin concerns and goals. Your skin will then be numbed with a topical ointment for about 10-15 minutes. This is removed before a serum packed with antioxidants and hydrating ingredients is applied to the skin. Then the needling begins, which will take approximately 15 minutes. Recovery Lotion is then applied to soothe and heal the skin, and you’re finished!

Is microneedling painful?

The most painful part will be the blood draw if you choose to do this treatment with PRP, or platelet rich plasma. (But it’s just one tiny pinch!) We’re only taking one tablespoon of blood, just a tiny amount, so this is super quick; it’ll be over before you know it. In regard to the needling itself, our topical numbing is top-notch. Most people are surprised how little they feel — some even say they find this treatment relaxing.

How many microneedling sessions would you recommend?

This really varies from patient to patient based on skin concerns and goals. For treatment of skin concerns such as melasma and scarring, 4-6 treatments every 4-6 weeks is recommended for best results. For skin health, maintenance and age management, a treatment every 12 weeks is recommended for best results.

Is there downtime after microneedling?

Yes. You will be red and may have slight swelling immediately after treatment. This significantly improves over the first 12 hours post treatment. Your skin might look and feel like you have a windburn or sunburn approximately 1-3 days post-treatment, depending on the sensitivity of your skin. We’ll provide you with a post-procedure kit to use during this downtime to ensure proper healing of the skin and optimal results.

Lastly, who is a good candidate for microneedling?

Microneedling is generally a safe treatment for most people. If you’re looking to plump skin, reduce scarring or target fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, skin laxity and dullness, microneedling is for you!

And yes, this treatment is considered safe for pregnant and breastfeeding patients. (That said, we always recommend approval from your OB-GYN or pediatrician prior to treatment.)
