Seasonal Skin Care Tips: Texas Summers

Seasonal Skin Care Tips: Texas Summers

Summers in Texas are hot, with temperatures often reaching into the 100s and humidity levels That feel far warmer than that.

Both the temperature and humidity can significantly impact your skin, so adapting your routine with seasonal skin care tips specific to Texas is crucial.

We’ve got a few tips to keep your skin looking its best this summer.

1. Cleansing is even more important in the summer

Although cleansing is always an essential part of your skin care routine — it helps rid the skin of debris, excess oil and external pollutants that may lead to a loss of radiance or more frequent breakouts (amongst other issues).

However, as the temperatures climb in the summer, cleansing your skin becomes even more crucial. In addition to keeping your skin clean and your pores open, cleansing your skin also helps to remove that extra layer of sweat that is a given with how hot and humid Texas can get in the summer.

A few tips for making the most of your cleanser:

  • You may need to adjust the type of skin cleanser you use seasonally. Depending on how much sweat and sunscreen you use, you may need a stronger cleanser to strip that off before applying the remainder of your products.
  • Use only lukewarm water when cleansing the skin. Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it vulnerable to external influences.
  • Use a soft or microfiber cloth to gently pat your skin dry. Rubbing your skin can irritate it and lead to premature signs of aging.

2. Choose the right moisturizer

While the extra humidity is helpful for skin health and wellness, it’s not enough to keep it as hydrated as it needs to be. Moisturizer is crucial for keeping the skin barrier at its optimal level of health.

However, you’ll likely not want to use the same moisturizer in the middle of the Texas summer as you would when the weather is colder. Winter calls for a heavier moisturizer, while most people can get away with a lighter-weight option in the summer. Some moisturizers even come with built-in SPF, so they can function as sunscreen as well.

3. Never forget the sunscreen

Sunscreen should always be in your skin care routine, but this step is at its most crucial in the summer. If we were only allowed to give you one seasonal skin care tip, it would be to never forget your sunscreen.

Sunscreen is essential for helping to reduce the amount of ultraviolet radiation that is allowed to impact your skin. Plus, the more you protect your skin from the sun, the longer you can fight off visible signs of premature aging like fine lines and wrinkles, thinning and hyperpigmentation (dark spots).

Sunscreens come in many different varieties, but the key is looking for one that checks all the boxes set by dermatologists — an SPF (sun protective factor) of 35 or higher, broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB radiation from the sun and water resistance (meaning you may not have to reapply as often).

4. Invest in a hat

It’s important to find other ways to protect your skin from the sun’s rays. A good, wide-brimmed hat is not only stylish but can also help to give you a little added protection from direct sunlight.

5. Try an ice roller

When the temperatures climb, it can be difficult to get relief from the heat. Ice rollers allow you to cool down while also providing benefits for your skin — constricting blood flow and reducing swelling (which can help with puffiness and under-eye circles).

Ice rollers combine all of the benefits of a traditional skin roller with at-home cryotherapy. You’ll wonder what you ever did without one.

5. Use cosmetic treatments

Cosmetic treatments can be just as beneficial in the summer as they are at any other time of the year — it comes down to knowing which ones will help you the most.
