If you’re dealing with a cleft chin that’s interfering with your dream appearance, you’re not alone — but there are a few steps you can take to smooth out the look of your cleft chin.
Read on to learn the basics of what a cleft chin is and how to address it.
If you’ve heard the term “butt chin,” this is actually referring to a cleft chin.
A cleft chin is when your chin doesn’t completely fuse together and, instead, leaves a dimple, indent or crease in the center of the chin.
We’ll start by saying there’s nothing clinically or aesthetically wrong with having a cleft chin — in fact, they’re more common than you might think. Some cleft chins are more pronounced than others, and a cleft chin typically has more to do with genetics than anything else.
That said, if your cleft chin is a source of frustration, there are many options available to help you smooth out its appearance.
For quick and nearly painless results, you can turn to non-surgical methods to treat your cleft chin. Though non-surgical options aren’t permanent fixes, you can more easily maintain your results without having to endure invasive procedures.
Keep reading to hear more about some great non-surgical options.
Available in-clinic at all Skin Pharm locations, Botox is a great option for individuals with subtle cleft chins. Botox injections work by paralyzing the muscles in your chin and can help minimize the appearance of a cleft chin. It’s a quick, simple method with great results.
Botox alone might not entirely eliminate the look of a cleft chin, but if your cleft isn’t extremely pronounced, Botox could be the perfect choice.
Botox generally lasts about three months, meaning it will require some upkeep to ensure long-term results.
Sculptra is an age-defying injectable that can help restore volume in areas like your cheeks, temples and chin. Sculptra works by stimulating collagen production in the skin, which is a crucial protein that helps your skin maintain a plump, firm and elastic appearance.
If the look of your cleft chin is more so a product of aging than a product of genetics, Sculptra could be a great way to address it. We recommend repeating Sculptra treatments every four to six weeks for a total of around two to four sessions.
The most effective, non-invasive method for treating a cleft chin is dermal fillers, another option available at any Skin Pharm clinic. Here’s how it works: you’ll have filler injected directly into the indent in your chin, which will “fill” the crease and, in this case, help minimize the appearance of your cleft chin.
Once the filler is injected, you’ll immediately see results. Your chin will have more volume and definition, and your cleft chin will seemingly disappear.
Whereas Botox paralyzes the muscles, filler works to add volume to your skin and fill in any gaps — which is especially ideal if your cleft chin is more pronounced. Chin filler does need some touch-up injections after six months to a year, but otherwise, there’s minimal upkeep needed.
For those with a more pronounced cleft chin that is a profound source of insecurity, surgical methods are another option — but you should keep in mind that surgical methods can lead to more severe pain and swelling in the affected area, as well as lengthy recovery times.
Be sure to consult a trusted medical provider before pursuing invasive procedures.
A chin implant is a form of chin augmentation surgery that essentially enhances the natural shape of your chin, providing more volume, structure and balance.
A chin implant can help contour your chin, filling in the gap or indent that causes a cleft chin to appear. Though this method can be effective, it does tend to come with high costs and long periods of downtime for recovery.
Fat grafting is a more extreme approach, but it can be an option for severe cases. This procedure takes fatty tissue from one area of your body and transfers it to another area — like taking fat from your abdomen and using it to fill the bump that causes a cleft chin.
As a more invasive method, this procedure is associated with longer recovery times and uncomfortable side effects.
If you’re not a fan of your cleft chin, we’ve got you covered with options and resources to treat it — without going under the knife. Find a skin treatment that fits your needs, and say goodbye to the cleft today.
