What is lip augmentation?

Lip augmentation is the umbrella term for an in-clinic cosmetic treatment that enhances the mouth shape, creating more youthful-looking, fuller lips. There are several different methods of lip augmentation.

The kind of lip treatment you receive depends on your personal goals and needs. People most commonly opt for the least invasive approach: nonsurgical lip injections. Injections are ideal for a temporary, easy approach to lip plumping.

For those who are ready to make a permanent lip change, longer-lasting treatment options are available — like lip implants and fat grafting, for example.

Lip implants are a surgical procedure that use plastic implants to permanently plump the lips. That said, it’s possible to have implants removed down the line.

Fat grafting is another long-lasting, but invasive, lip augmentation service. This treatment method involves harvesting fat from another area of the body (usually somewhere like the stomach) and then injecting the purified fat back into the lips to make them look naturally fuller. Fat grafting generally lasts up to five years.

While all lip augmentation treatments can provide great results, our Houston clinic prioritizes nonsurgical methods — specifically dermal lip filler and Botox injections.

Both of these injection services are temporary and completely safe treatments that help enhance the shape of your lips or make them perfectly plump.

What lip injections are available at Skin Pharm Houston?

A treatment we often recommend is lip injections. We suggest opting for lip filler injections or Botox in and around the mouth. The results aren’t permanent — but they'll last from six to 12 months — which means you're always able to adjust your treatment plan if your needs change.

For instance, it’s easy to change the amount of filler used to plump up your lips even more or opt for a more natural lip look.

Whether you want a slight lift, want to enhance your lips' natural shape or completely embrace a more plump pout, lip filler or Botox can suit your needs.

Lip filler

Lip filler is a popular treatment here at Skin Pharm. It helps add fullness, smooth out wrinkles and fine lines and add volume to the lips. Your smile will look full, youthful and plump after receiving filler treatments at our Houston location.

Here’s how filler works. At Skin Pharm, we offer Juvederm and Restylane injections, two FDA-approved dermal filler options that are made with skin-friendly ingredients like hyaluronic acid. The dermal fillers are injected into the lips with a thin needle, making them appear fuller.

Depending on your skin goals, we can opt to inject the corners of the mouth as well to help smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Filler lasts six to 12 months and will require further services to restore and maintain your results.

Lip filler is a non-invasive method that increases lip volume while subtly filling fine lines. The injections are given by our trusted advanced practice providers in Houston — Adriana Castañeda, NP-C; Josie Barnard, PA-C; Macy Siddiqi, PA-C and Taylor Boagni, PA-C — who will work with you to achieve your desired lip results.

Botox

You’re likely familiar with Botox’s stellar reputation for seamlessly minimizing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and other visible signs of aging on the face. But did you know Botox can also be used as a lip augmentation treatment to enhance the shape of your lips?

Here at Skin Pharm Houston, we offer Botox injections for multiple areas of the face, including the lips. Botox is a neuromuscular blocking agent.

Botox works to prevent the compound called acetylcholine from releasing itself, which in turn temporarily paralyzes facial muscles. This “paralyzation” makes it difficult for the muscles to contract, which prevents the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

When Botox is injected into the lips and corners of the mouth, the result is called a lip flip. It makes the top lip more pronounced and reshapes the mouth, making it appear fuller and more youthful.

Essentially, instead of putting filler into the lips, Botox injections help create the look of fuller lips and enhance your natural appearance, making them appear plump and smooth. The results kick in within two weeks and require additional injections to maintain the effects every two to three months.

A skin care provider from our Houston clinic will administer the injections, working with you carefully to provide the most natural results possible.

Who's an ideal candidate for lip injections?

Your physical health is a priority, so your overall health should be in good condition before you get lip injections. This means you’re healthy and don’t have any active infections externally or orally, including canker sores or cold sores.

You should plan to avoid blood-thinning medicine like aspirin or ibuprofen for the several days before treatment (with approval from your primary physician). If you’re currently pregnant or breastfeeding, you may not receive lip injection services.

In addition to being in good physical health, the ideal candidate for lip injections should know what to expect and have realistic expectations. Our skin care providers in Houston aim to provide the best, most natural-looking results.

Our providers will work with you to understand your skin goals and craft the right injection plan for you. If you’re hoping to enhance the natural shape of your lips and have a positive outlook on the experience, you’re a great candidate for lip augmentation at our Houston clinic!

What happens at my appointment?

So, you’ve decided to seek out an expert lip augmentation service. Depending on which option you choose, your appointment experience will be a bit different.

Here’s how your appointment will go for both lip filler and Botox injection options.

Lip Filler

If you’re receiving lip filler, the first step of your appointment will be to apply a topical numbing cream on and around the injection site. We want to ensure you're as comfortable as possible during your treatment!

Your provider will discuss the right amount of filler with you before the appointment. The chosen amount will depend on how you want your lips to look.

After numbing the injection site, our Houston advanced practice providers will inject the dermal filler into the lips.

After injection, you might experience redness and swelling. This is completely normal and often resolves within a couple days following your appointment. Your provider will also give you tips to help reduce swelling at your appointment.

You’ll see results immediately and reap the full effects about three to five days after the initial appointment. The filler will plump your lips, leaving you with natural-looking results that will last six to twelve months — sometimes even longer!

Botox

Botox injections are even more painless than dermal fillers, so topical numbing cream typically isn’t applied before administering injections. That said, if you feel more comfortable using a numbing cream prior to injections, feel free to talk to your advanced practice provider and they can accommodate your needs.

Low doses of Botox or Dysport are injected just below the skin in the desired site. In this case, the injections will likely occur around the corners of the mouth and into the orbicularis oris muscle around the top lip. Botox injections use very small, fine needles, which makes the experience virtually pain-free.

After injections, you might experience slight redness and swelling. Like lip filler, swelling is completely normal, and your skin care provider will give you tips to ease swelling.

Results of the Botox should kick in within two weeks after injections. It’s important to get another round of injections to maintain results after about eight weeks.

What to know about the lip injection recovery process and results

The beauty of the nonsurgical methods of lip augmentation we offer at our Houston location, like dermal fillers and Botox, is that there's minimal recovery time. You’ll see results either immediately upon injection or within a couple weeks — and you shouldn't need to take time off to recover.

Immediately following your appointment, it’s common to experience tenderness, swelling and redness. The swelling and tingling post-injection can be slightly uncomfortable, but isn’t debilitating or exhausting. Any of these side effects should subside within the first five days after injections, usually sooner.

If you do find the swelling to be uncomfortable, apply a cold compress to the injection area for no more than ten minutes at a time. Be sure to avoid touching your lips or the direct injection site. Very lightly apply pressure to the surrounding area to help reduce swelling.

Staying hydrated is key. We recommend drinking plenty of water in the first few days after injections. Avoid repetitive and harsh contact with the mouth within the first day. Otherwise, you shouldn’t experience discomfort, and swelling and redness should go away within days.

FAQs about lip injections

How long does it take to see results?

You’ll generally see dermal lip filler results immediately after injections. The filler gets injected directly into the lips, immediately plumping them. Botox injections take about two weeks to see full results.

Are lip injections painful?

You'll feel a little pinch, but most patients tolerate treatment well! Both filler and Botox use very small needles. We have several ways to ensure your comfort during your appointment, including numbing cream.

You might experience minor discomfort after your injection treatments from the initial swelling, but this will go down within one to five days after receiving injections.

Will my lips look natural?

Yes! Both dermal lip fillers and Botox work to enhance your natural lip shape. Filler makes your lips plump, while Botox helps reshape your mouth to make your lips appear fuller and youthful. We always aim to provide natural, never-overdone results.

When can I return to work?

Lip injections require no time off from work. You’ll be all set to return to work and your normal daily routines the next day after receiving lip injections. Just be sure to be gentle on your lips for the first few days, and keep in mind that you may have some redness or swelling.

How long will lip fillers last?

Lip injections are temporary. Lip filler should last between six to twelve months and Botox injections should last around eight weeks before needing another round of injections.
